Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging is a method of obtaining medical images using high-frequency sound waves. Ultrasound exams are safe and do not use ionizing radiation. Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body’s internal tissues and organs. Ultrasound imaging is a non-invasive image technique that sends high-frequency sound waves into the body to produce images of soft tissues and internal organs. An ultrasound probe and gel work together to absorb the reflected sound waves to produce images on the monitor. Ultrasound enables the radiologist to make an accurate diagnosis of numerous medical conditions and diseases without the use of surgery or radiation by providing a clear window into the human body.

What should I expect during my Ultrasound?

How do I prepare for my Ultrasound?

What should I expect during my Ultrasound?

You will be asked to lie on an exam table. The exam is performed using the ultrasound machine and a device that both emits and receives sound waves called an ultrasound probe. A clear gel is applied to the skin on the area that is being scanned. This gel allows sound waves to travel back and forth between the probe and the area that is being imaged to allow the sound waves to pass into your body. The technologist will move the probe over the area of interest until the desired images are captured.

Ultrasound exams are painless and usually very quick. Once the imaging is complete, the clear gel will be wiped off your skin and you will be able to resume your normal activity.

How do I prepare for my Ultrasound?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your Ultrasound appointment. You may be asked to remove clothing and/or jewelry in the area being examined.

Preparation for your ultrasound exam will depend on the type of exam you are having. For some scans you will be instructed to not to eat or drink for as many as 6 hours before your appointment. Other ultrasound scans you may be asked to completely drink up to 32 ounces of water 1 hour prior to your appointment and avoid urinating to ensure your bladder is full. Your physician and/or the ultrasound department will inform you of any preparation that is necessary for your scan prior to your appointment.
